WATCH YOUR WORDSTM
An Experiental Workshop in Mindful Communication
This workshop takes a fresh approach to the challenges of communicating at home, work, or other contexts. We believe that successful communication is possible when individuals learn to remain centered and calm, even in the heat of conflict. Many courses in communciation teach common sense principles, but often this "head knowledge" is the first to go when emotions run hot.
Mindful communication, on the other hand, uses principles of mindfulness in training both mind and body to effectively regulate emotions such as anger, fear, and anxiety. Like most approaches to increasing one's emotional intellegence, the lessons contained in Watch Your Words™ require regular practice based on the experiential state-based learning exercises of this workshop.
State-based learning suggests that learning, recall, and emotions are linked. For example, if you want to apply a new method for resolving disputes with your spouse even during a heated argument, you probably should have trained in that method during a heated argument. In other words, the emotional context for learning must be as realistic as possible if recall is to be reliable. Although we don't ask particpants to pick fights at a Watch Your Words™ workshop (that wouldn't be ethical!), we do provide a "graded, mastery experience" that is emotionally challenging as well as informative.
